After some heavy investment in early 1997,
Mansfield's "Green Gingerman" is no more and, in its place, is the
extensively refurbished White Lion. The brewery should be congratulated in restoring the pub's
original name.
The outside has been given a coat of paint (see the old photo,
left). Gone is the downbeat interior,
and in its place you find
an extremely pleasant atmosphere complete with lots of light wood, separate areas and individual
cubicles. And the pint of Riding they serve is very good indeed (or, at least, it was when we
visited).
Redevelopment Threat: The March-May 1999 edition
of Hull CAMRA's "Pub Mirror" reveals that a redevelopment scheme for the whole bus
station area threatens to sweep away the White Lion (and the nearby Providence). Anyone with strong
views about this should make them known to Mr K Marshall, Transportation and Planning Division,
Hull City Council, Kingston House, Bond Street, Hull HU1 3ER.
More information can be found on Hull City Council's site at
http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/eda/property.htm.
However, there's no point trying to use the e-mail address on that page to contact Mr Marshall,
because during the week ending 23 April it consistently bounced everything sent to it. Let's hope
no major inward investors were trying to get in touch...
