| This is another area that has seen great change over the years.
The four genuine pubs featured here were at one time integral parts of a thriving port. Then they
found themselves close neighbours to dereliction as the City turned its back on the Humber and
everything to do with it. And now they have witnessed the rebirth of the area with the building of
Castle Street; the marina; and the Princes Quay Shopping Centre. And, of course, the Forte Hotel
that houses the fifth "pub" included here is entirely new.
This is without doubt an area of contrasts. The newly lauched
Hog's Breath on one side of the road now gazes on the back of Princes Quay on the other. The
Whittington and Cat is now neighboured by the crinkly sheds of a retail park. And, perhaps most
striking of all, the Earl de Grey and Forte Hotel now face one another across Castle Street. |
